This guide will help you focus on what really matters: enjoying the season and each other's company, creating moments that will last long after the decorations come down.
There’s something special about the holiday season—it’s the time to gather with loved ones, share important moments, and enjoy the festive spirit. With its impressive light displays, holiday markets, winter sports, and music and dance performances, Utah has become a perfect destination for experiencing this joy.
Let’s explore five must-try experiences to make your holiday season unforgettable in Utah.
Before we jump into the best Utah has to offer, let's get on the same page about the "festive season." It’s more than just a couple of days off work; it’s a whole atmosphere. This time of year is about slowing down, connecting with the people who matter most, and soaking in the warmth and cheer that seems to be everywhere. It’s about creating a feeling of togetherness, whether you're gathered around a fireplace or exploring a new snowy trail. Understanding this helps set the stage for a holiday trip that’s less about a packed itinerary and more about making genuine, lasting memories with your favorite people.
When we talk about the festive season, we’re referring to that wonderful stretch of time surrounding Christmas and New Year's. It’s not just a single day but a whole period filled with celebrations and traditions. This extended timeframe is a gift in itself, allowing for more relaxed travel and quality time without the pressure of cramming everything into one 24-hour period. It gives you the breathing room to truly settle in, enjoy your surroundings, and focus on what’s important—connecting with family and friends. This is your chance to build new traditions or revisit old ones in a beautiful new setting.
At its heart, the festive season is about connection. It’s a time when "families and friends come together, creating a feeling of warmth and kindness." The real magic happens in the shared moments—the laughter over a board game, the quiet conversations by the fire, or the shared awe of a beautiful winter landscape. Having a dedicated space away from the routines and distractions of daily life can make these connections even stronger. It’s an opportunity to build a bank of memories that your family will cherish for years, turning a simple holiday trip into a meaningful annual tradition.
A little planning goes a long way in making sure your holiday trip is smooth and stress-free. From deciding where to stay to knowing what to pack, thinking through the details ahead of time frees you up to be present and enjoy the moment once you arrive. Utah’s winter wonderland is waiting, but its high altitudes and snowy conditions require some preparation. Getting the logistics sorted out first means you can focus on the fun stuff, like skiing, exploring charming mountain towns, or simply relaxing with a cup of hot cocoa and a stunning view. Let’s walk through the key things to consider for your festive Utah getaway.
Your choice of lodging can define your entire vacation experience. While hotels offer convenience, they can often feel impersonal and cramped, especially for families or groups. Imagine trying to cook a holiday meal in a microwave or gathering everyone in a small room with two beds. A vacation home, on the other hand, provides the space and amenities to truly relax and connect. You get a full kitchen for preparing festive meals, a comfortable living area for games and movies, and separate bedrooms for privacy. This home-away-from-home environment makes it easier to create those cherished holiday memories. If you're curious about what's available, you can explore listings to see how a real home can transform your trip.
When budgeting for a hotel stay, the price you see online is rarely the final price you pay. Many hotels add mandatory "resort fees," daily parking charges, and extra costs for amenities like Wi-Fi. These can add up quickly, creating an unexpected dent in your vacation budget. In contrast, a vacation home rental or a co-ownership model offers more transparency. With Fraxioned, for example, operating costs are shared among owners and billed clearly, so you know exactly what to expect. This straightforward approach helps you manage your budget effectively, leaving more for the experiences that matter.
Packing for Utah in the winter is all about smart layering. The weather can change quickly, especially as you move between different elevations. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a fleece or wool mid-layer for warmth, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer jacket and pants. Don’t forget insulated, waterproof boots with good traction for walking on snow and ice. Accessories are key: a warm hat, gloves or mittens, thick socks, and sunglasses are non-negotiable. And a surprising essential? Sunscreen. The sun’s reflection off the snow at high altitudes can cause a serious sunburn, even on cloudy days.
To fully experience Utah’s majestic landscapes, renting a car is your best bet. For winter travel, especially if you’re heading into the mountains for skiing, consider a vehicle with all-wheel or four-wheel drive for better handling on snowy roads. To keep your trip budget-friendly, take advantage of having a kitchen in your vacation home. Cooking even a few meals, like breakfast and dinner, can save a significant amount of money compared to eating out for every meal. Also, look for free festive activities, such as visiting public light displays, window shopping in historic downtowns, or finding a scenic spot for a winter hike.
The pressure to create the "perfect" holiday can sometimes overshadow the joy of the season. Between travel, planning, and family dynamics, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But the goal of a vacation is to return home feeling refreshed, not more tired than when you left. The key is to be intentional about building rest and relaxation into your schedule. Acknowledging that "festive burnout" is a real thing is the first step. From there, you can take simple, proactive measures to protect your peace and ensure your holiday is genuinely happy and restorative for everyone involved.
Have you ever felt completely drained by the time the actual holiday arrives? That’s festive fatigue. As one expert puts it, "Christmas exhaustion, also called 'festive burnout,' is a real feeling of being very tired, stressed, and irritable during the holiday season." It can manifest as feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list, having a short temper with loved ones, or just wanting to hide from it all. Recognizing these signs isn't a weakness; it's a signal from your body and mind that you need to slow down and recalibrate. Pay attention to these feelings so you can address them before they steal your holiday joy.
If you start feeling the burnout creep in, there are simple ways to get back on track. The best advice is often the simplest: "Listen to Your Body, Get More Vitamins, Exercise." Don't overschedule your days. Leave room for spontaneous fun or just quiet downtime. A brisk walk in the crisp Utah air can do wonders for your mood. Make sure you’re eating nourishing food and staying hydrated. Most importantly, give yourself permission to say no. You don’t have to do everything. Prioritize the activities and traditions that bring you the most joy and let the rest go. For more tips on a hassle-free vacation, check out our FAQ page.

As you can imagine, these stunning light displays are incredibly popular, especially on weekends and closer to the holidays. A little planning can help you skip the longest lines and fully soak in the magic. For ticketed events like Luminaria, booking your time slot online in advance is essential. For free attractions like Temple Square, consider visiting on a weekday evening. Arriving early not only helps you avoid the biggest crowds but also lets you experience that special moment when the lights first begin to twinkle against the evening sky. Having a comfortable home base nearby gives you the flexibility to visit during these quieter times, making the experience much more relaxed and personal.
One of the most exciting things about holidays is exploring markets and finding unique gifts for loved ones. Utah’s Christmas markets offer a festive experience where visitors can stroll through local crafts, sample seasonal foods, and enjoy live performances. These markets provide a chance to support local artisans and discover handmade crafts.
Did You Know? A special journey awaits in Heber City with the Polar Express ride. This 90-minute round trip to the North Pole includes hot cocoa, holiday songs, and a special visit from Santa Claus. Children receive a special gift, and the entire trip is filled with entertainment from elves and cocoa chefs.
Holiday markets are so much more than just a place to shop; they're a full-sensory experience for the whole family. Imagine your kids’ faces lighting up as they watch live performances, explore rows of unique, handmade crafts, and soak in the festive energy. It’s a wonderful opportunity to find one-of-a-kind gifts together while teaching them the value of supporting local artisans. These moments of discovery and shared excitement are what build the best holiday memories, turning a simple shopping trip into a cherished family tradition you can look forward to year after year.
No holiday market visit is complete without indulging in some festive treats, and Utah's markets do not disappoint. The Christkindlmarkt in Salt Lake City, with its charming wooden booths, is especially famous for its delicious German-inspired food. You can almost smell the sweet aroma of roasted nuts, warm pretzels, and spiced hot chocolate just thinking about it. Grabbing a tasty snack is the perfect way to warm up as you wander through the stalls. It’s these simple pleasures—sharing a treat and enjoying the festive flavors—that make the experience so special and memorable for everyone.
The holiday season in Utah is a celebration of arts and culture through captivating performances. From ballet to theater to choral music, these performances capture the heart of the festive cheer.
These beloved holiday shows are popular for a reason, so booking your tickets well in advance is a smart move. If you have little ones, consider an earlier performance, like an 11 a.m. show, when they're likely to have more energy. Don't worry about logistics; most venues are well-prepared for families. Staff are usually on hand to help you check strollers, making it easy to get settled. Just remember that photos and videos are typically not allowed during the performance, so you can all be fully present in the moment. A great pro-tip is to bring a small, quiet activity, like a notebook and some markers, to keep kids happily occupied while you wait for the curtain to rise.
To keep things relaxed and stress-free, plan to arrive about an hour before the show starts. This gives you plenty of time to find your seats, make a quick trip to the restroom, and grab any snacks without feeling rushed. While you generally can't bring your own food or drinks, most theaters have concessions available for a pre-show treat. The holidays can be wonderfully busy, but it's also easy to get worn out. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the crowds, find a quiet corner and take a few deep breaths. After a full day, a warm bath back at your home-away-from-home can be the perfect way to unwind before an early night, ensuring everyone is refreshed for the next day's adventures.
What’s a holiday without themes? Themed events are the most interesting part of the holiday season - some villages even set festival themes with exciting rides and games.
To make the most of your holiday trip, a little planning goes a long way. Many of Utah's most beloved attractions, from the Christkindlmarkt to Ballet West's The Nutcracker, run on specific dates and can sell out quickly. Checking schedules and booking tickets in advance is the best way to avoid disappointment and ensure you don’t miss out on creating those special memories. This is especially true for popular timed-entry events like Christmas in Color or the North Pole Festival in Ogden. Why should I choose a vacation home over a hotel for a holiday trip? A vacation home offers a completely different quality of experience, especially during the holidays. Instead of being confined to a small room, you have the space to truly live and connect. You get a full kitchen for cooking festive meals together, a comfortable living room for board games or movies by the fire, and separate bedrooms so everyone can have their own space. It’s less about just having a place to sleep and more about having a central, comfortable hub where your family can relax and create those lasting memories we talked about.
With co-ownership, how can I be sure I'll get to use the home for the holidays? That’s a great question and a common one. The scheduling system is designed with fairness in mind, ensuring every owner gets opportunities to book time during popular seasons, including the holidays. Using a simple and equitable booking platform, you can plan your stays well in advance. The system rotates priority for selecting peak dates, so everyone has a fair chance to establish their own holiday traditions in the home over the years.
The post mentioned avoiding hidden hotel fees. How are costs handled with a co-owned home? Transparency is key. Unlike hotels that often surprise you with resort fees, parking charges, and other extras, the costs of co-ownership are straightforward. As an owner, you share the home's annual operating expenses—like property management, maintenance, and utilities—with the other owners. These costs are billed clearly, so you know exactly what you're paying for and can budget accordingly, without any last-minute surprises.
I love the idea of starting a family tradition. Can I make a co-owned house feel like my own? Absolutely. While you can't repaint the walls, the feeling of "home" comes from the experiences you have there. The homes are beautifully furnished and fully equipped, providing a consistent and comfortable backdrop for your traditions. Many properties also offer dedicated owner storage, so you can keep personal items like your favorite holiday decorations, board games, or even ski gear on-site, ready and waiting for your next visit.
What if my family aren't big skiers? Is a Utah vacation home still a good fit for a winter trip? Definitely. While Utah is famous for its slopes, a winter trip here offers so much more. As the post highlights, you can fill your days exploring festive light displays, shopping at charming holiday markets, ice skating, or catching a classic performance like The Nutcracker. The home serves as your cozy basecamp for all kinds of winter adventures, whether that means hitting the slopes or simply curling up with hot cocoa and enjoying the snowy view.

Loved this house! Close to the center of everything but far enough away for privacy and peace and quiet. We loved sitting on the back covered patio in the afternoon/evenings and looking at the great view of the lake and green scapes.
The hot tub was perfect for after an activity filled day.
The place was clean except for one thing and I contacted the company and they took care of it right away and made it right . We loved staying there and would definitely stay there again. Great location . The only thing I didn’t like was there were two air conditioners right outside the master and at night they were noisy while I was falling asleep but once I was asleep
They didn’t bother me .
What an experience!! The ease of driving up and everything was ready for us. Not just a rental experience but the wonderful feeling of owning the property we vacation in. The team at FRAXIONED is so helpful and always available to handle any needs we have, big or small. we own three shares in two different properties and it is one of the best decisions we have made for our family.
This home is no doubt the best AirBnB I’ve ever stayed in. The location is perfect and the amenities are outstanding. If you’re looking for a place to stay in the area you have to look here. Our group of 12 had plenty of space for golf trip. Easy access to the courses we stayed and we found plenty to do. We would absolutely return to this home in the future.

I honestly thought this place was too good to be true. Until we showed up! Everything was just like the photos, and there was so much to do INSIDE the house, that no one was ever board. We came in for our wedding and had out entire wedding party stay with us. Day of the wedding, i stayed on the 2nd floor playing games the whole time while the bride got ready on the 1st floor (since we couldn't see each other until the ceremony). Everything was neatly laid out and the instruction on how to work the pool/check-in were very clear. This was the best Airbnb i've ever been too, and my friends/family loved everything about it!
What a dream! Ownership with Fraxioned is sensical and hassle-free. We just bring our clothes and get a clean, beautiful home fully ready to dive into our vacation; every time. The rental income has also been very nice to cover the expenses and has been an easy investment to track.
My husband and i had been looking for a good "starter" investment. We wanted to start and airbnb but it was just going to be such a big expense. Fraxioned was the perfect solution, because we were able to purchase 1/8 of a home, instead of the whole thing! Dan Henry sold us a share of a beautiful home in Bear Lake, and he was so nice and easy to work with! He was always available to answer questions and send over information. Definitely would recommend Fraxioned to anyone who is wanting to get into real estate investing, without having to spend your life saving to do it!
